Quilting Projects

I made my first quilt sandwich and finished up basting before stitching it all together. The lines are not straight but I did not plan out the stitching on this quilt. I wanted to continue getting used to my machine and practice without the stress of needing to be straight. Squaring it up was simple and satisfying.

I do feel that I am getting better with the machine so I started my actual “goal” quilt using the baby clothes. I planned and stitched about 30 rows of baby clothes. I thought it was just going to be a straight block quilt but I did not like the thickness of the seams when ironing the seams to the sides and the thought of continuing to work with these seams when putting the rows together. I changed the plan and ironed the seams open. I went to Joann’s and bought some fabric to put between the rows. It was originally supposed to just be the purple fabric but when I was started cutting it, I realized I messed up and had to improvise if I wanted to continue to use the fabric that I started cutting. Now, the butterfly fabric that will be on the back is now the middle column going down the quilt with the purple on the left and right sides. I’ve joined 9 rows so far and I feel it’s getting too big for my comfort at the moment. This quilt has an estimated 29 rows. After a couple of days thinking about it, I have come up with the idea to make 2 more pieces at 10 rows each and then joining those 3 pieces together. Therefore, I only need to be super careful with 2 rows when it starts getting really big.

I also have some pillows that need pillow coverings. I have pinned too many Pinterest ideas to admit and I started cutting Christmas fabric without a plan! I ended up creating half square triangles (HSTs) and putting a pattern together. It needs a border to make it a tiny bit bigger but I love how it has turned out so far. I will likely make envelope covers to keep it simple. Plans could always change at any point in time though-HA!

I also let my daughter create her own quilt design using larger baby clothes squares and am working on sewing that together as well. Too many projects? I’m not sure but I do love messing around with this stuff!
